Our ship - the Lomonosov - was named after an important Russian member of the Age of Enlightenment. Mikhail Lomonosov was born on April 15, 1711 in the far north of Russia. From 1731 to 1743 he studied in St. Petersburg and Germany. In Germany he studied with Christian Wolfe. In 1743 Lomonosov returned to St. Petersburg and a position first as chemistry professor and later as rector at St. Petersburg University. In 1755 he founded Moscow State University and in 1764 was appointed Secretary of State. He died in 1765 after making important contributions to literature, science and education.
