Capitol Reef National Park - Capitol Gorge Pioneer Trail - End of Summer

The Capitol Gorge Pioneer Trail follows an old wagon road that cuts through the Waterpocket Fold. It was used by the very first settlers to enter the area in the second half of the nineteenth century. Several stone cisterns that hold rainwater are located above the trail and are examples of the "waterpockets" that give the area its name. There are a few petroglyphs that indicate that the area was used by Native Americans and the names of early prospectors and settlers are carved into the rock above the trail.
