Canyonlands National Park - Monitor & Merrimac Buttes

The Monitor and Merrimac Buttes are composed of Entrada sandstone. There are three components in this sandstone (Dewey Bridge, Slickrock, and Moab Tounge). These components erode at different rates and form giant moniliths like these two. (Monitor and Merrimac were named after the two famous Civil War ironclad ships. Merrimac on left, Monitor on right).
