A Trip to Australia and New Zealand
Napier - Museum

Napier poster

The main museum in town has a small but excellent exhibit of Maori items (they discouraged photography of the Maori material), and houses a major exhibit related to the earthquake that destroyed the city, but the really interesting exhibits were those related to the Art Deco period and what was then considered to be "modern design." We found ourselves saying over and over quietly to ourselves "hey I used to have one of those things." We tried not to say it out loud for fear it would date us, but a lot of other visitors were quite obviously experiencing similar feelings. It is one thing to replace an item with a newer widget, but it is entirely another matter to see a bit of your own past being preserved in a museum.

Another interesting exhibit was a novel approach to books and the importance of reading.
