John Wesley Powell named Flaming Gorge in 1869 when he and his party of nine men made the first recorded passage of this portion of the river. The Flaming Gorge Dam, built during 1958-1964, impounds the waters of the Green River to form a reservoir that extends more than 90 miles upstream. Fishing, boating, camping and hiking are available in the area. |
