Jemez State Monument

Jemez State Monument is located on New Mexico State Highway 4 in the northern part of the state. More than five centuries ago Towa Indians established Guisewa Village here and in 1610 the Spanish built the San Jose de los Jemez Catholic Church. The people who lived here are thought to have been the ancestors of the people now living in the nearby Jemez Pueblo. The monument encompasses the Guisewa village site as well as the Spanish church ruins.
