Crested Butte - Fall

The Crested Butte region was home to Ute Indians before the arrival of Europeans in the nineteenth century. The earliest of these were fur trappers and explorers such as Captain John Gunnison. In the 1860s and 1870s coal and silver mines were opened in the area and the town of Crested Butte was established. Ranching was developed in the surrounding area to support the miners and remained an important part of the economy when the silver and coal mines became unprofitable. In the 1960s a ski area was built and the community turned to tourism for it's economic support.
