Fort Uncompahgre

Fort Uncompahgre was built by Antoine Robidoux in about 1828 at the confluence of the Grand (Gunnison) and Uncompahgre Rivers. Antoine, also known as "Anton French," traded widely in the Southwest. This trading post was an important way station in the early nineteenth century and men like Kit Carson, Joe Meek, and Robert E. Lee visited. Fort Uncompahgre was destroyed in a Ute Indian attack in September 1844 when most of the occupants were killed. Today's fort is a reconstruction on the outskirts of Delta Colorado. Anyone interested in the era of fur trappers should put this living museum on their must visit list.
