San Juan County

Navajo Tribal Park

In 1884 President Chester Arthur added this area to the Navajo Reservation. In 1906, John Wetherill and Clyde Colville established a trading post at nearby Oijeto. In 1924, Harry and Mike Goulding established the trading post that is still in operation just outside of the park. In 1939, John Ford used this region as the backdrop for his quintessential Western movie - Stagecoach, featuring John Wayne. The film made Wayne a star and there followed a series of other important Ford westerns all made in this region. Today, movie memorabilia can be found for sale in both Goulding and at the View Hotel inside the park.
