In 1681 a great grandson of Yusuf converted to Orthodox Christianity and was christened Dmitri Yusupov. Dmitri went into the Czar's service, first as a governor and later as an ambassador. In 1682, during the Strelets Revolt, Dmitri commanded a detachment of Tartar soldiers in defense of the young dual czars, Ivan and Peter in their refuge in the Trinity Lavra. He was awarded an estate in Yaroslavl for this service. Dmitri's son, Grigory, became a confidant of Peter the Great and participated in all of Peter's many military and naval campaigns. In compensation he was awarded enormous land grants throughout the country.
