Sitka City - The Russian Bishop's House

The Bishop's House was constructed in 1842 by the Russian American Company as the residence for the Russian Orthodox Bishop resident in Sitka. In addition to the residence, a Russian Orthodox chapel is built into the structure. Then Bishop Innocent was the first to occupy the building. He went on to become Archbishop in 1850 and his archdiocese included parts of eastern Siberia as well as the Russian territories in North America. In 1853 he moved his residence to Yakutsk and was replaced in Sitka by Bishop Peter Lyaskov. In 1867 Bishop Paul Popov replaced Peter. In 1870 Bishop John Metropolsky replaced Paul and in 1872 he moved the diocese residence to San Francisco. At that time the diocese was transfered from the Eastern Siberian Archdiocese to that of Saint Petersburg.
