Gypsum

William Schliff, an immigrant from Germany is thought to have been the first European to settle in the area of present day Gypsum in 1881. O.W. Daggett followed in 1882 to establish a ranch. Sometime in the mid-1880s the Denver & Rio Grande laid tracks through Gypsum. President Theodore Roosevelt hunted bear here in the early years of the twentieth century. Today it boasts a regional airport that services ski and tourist facilities nearby. The American Gypsum drywall plant and mine are located there.
