Glacier Bay National Park - Spring

Glacier Bay National Park in the spring can be a very dramatic place. The clouds crowd in low on the fiords and the low light levels permit one to see that the heart of the glacier ice is blue. The massive flows are being relentlessly pushed down into Glacier Bay by tons of snow falling in the mountains miles above the water. Centuries old wedges of glacier, large and small, calve into the ocean at the face of the ice walls with thunderous cracks and deep rumbling that throbs in the cold crisp air. Huge waves are generated that stir the bottom and flocks of birds circle to feed in the disturbed waters. It is a magic place.
