During their long history Russians or their enemies have often contemplated the destruction of one or another of their magnificent buildings. This church is no exception. Soviet leaders actually ordered it demolished, but had to divert the men and explosives to the defense of Leningrad during the Second World War. While undergoing nearly three years of continual attack they used the Church of the Savior on the Blood as a mortuary for those who died from the famine that plagued the besieged city. |
