Small lacquer boxes are another important souvenir that many of our compatriots purchased along the way. Variations were offered throughout our trip, but the most impressive array of these little jewels was found in an out-of-the-way gallery in Yaroslavl. Subtle designs painted under a microscope with a one hair brush command a high price while rougher versions are offered in the stalls at bargain rates. The traditional designs are usually drawn from Russian mythology or the history of the Orthodox Church. |
