A Trip to Russia - St. Petersburg - Peterhof Palace - Spring

The fountains at Peterhof were modeled after those found in one of King Louis XIV's palaces outside of Paris. The central fountain depicts Samson tearing open the jaws of a lion and was constructed in celebration of Peter's victory over Sweden in the Great Northern War. The key Battle of Poltava was won by Russia on Saint Samson's Day. The symbolism is enriched by the fact that the lion is a part of Sweden's coat of arms. During WWII the fountain was destroyed by the German Army. It was reconstructed in 1947.
