A Trip to Russia - St. Petersburg - Peterhof Palace - Spring

There is a certain sameness to the palaces. I am not saying that if you have seen one palace you have seen them all. Quite the contrary each has its own personality and each is furnished differently. All are worthy of a visit and I would love to see more of them. At the same time this main stairway in Peterhof has a lot of similarity to the one in the Winter Palace. Most of the main rooms of state in all of the palaces which we visited were of a kind. Partly due to period furnishings, partly to an intense desire to be accepted by other European monarchs, and perhaps partly because each succeeding monarch pretty much updated all of them to his or her own tastes. There are dramatic exceptions. Peter's Maritime Study is unique, as is Catherine's Amber Room, as are the White Balconies in the Winter Palace.
